Oktober(chem)fest 2016
We are a graduate student led organization located in the chemistry department at the University of Cincinnati. Our main purpose is to provide underrepresented individuals a platform to excel in their respective scientific fields and to become mentors for generations to follow. Our mission to promote diversity and inclusion in the sciences involves creating a pipeline from elementary to high school including undergraduates to encourage advancement towards college, graduate school and beyond.
Through our outreach events, we promote diversity in STEM at the Elementary, Middle and High school levels which will provide these students with insight into the vast opportunities available for underrepresented groups. We can achieve these objectives by doing scientific demonstrations, tutoring (science and math) and providing hands on experiences in our department research labs (for high school students). We also want to create a pipeline for outreach at non four year and community colleges in Cincinnati, in hopes to prepare them to attend higher education institutions.
We facilitate peer to peering mentoring to encourage support amongst students in both undergraduate and grades school, in hopes of increasing retention.
We organize professional development workshops and participate in local ACS networking events to firstly advise students on how to be successful and secondly, to build connections with those who came before us so that we can learn from their vast wisdom and experience. Additionally, graduate students invite a dynamic scientist (industry, academia or government) from an underrepresented background who will be sharing his/her scientific knowledge (technical seminar) and have social communication (candid round table seminar) with our graduate students.
